Hello friends!
It’s good to be back! Starting the new year with our first dose of vive la différence in 2013! Yay!
Today we have another boy. Yep, it’s true. Another one has come out of the woodworks. Talking of wood, of grey, of design, today’s guest is no other than the delectable and king of aesthetics, mr. Gerard McGuickin, affectionately termed by me as mr. grey. Gerard is the author of walnutgreydesign, ‘the discerning design blog! If you want a challenging and stimulating read with interesting points of views and slick images, Gerard is your man!
For new readers:
The concept: each month I will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image/vignette. There are 20 themes and 20 objects for my guest to choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then create an image/vignette based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a drawing, a collage, a hand-painted image, a styled table top… the choice is yours! The fun part is that you, my readers, will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.
Let’s kick this off: Gerard chose the theme: a weekend by the coast with the following objects: glass ware, lamps, toys
“I pictured this weekend in an idyllic waterside setting, a remote place on the Danish coastline. My residence is modern, constructed from glass and concrete. It faces the sea in the west, the extensive glass facade framing the ice blue water, shimmering clear and crisp in the strong winter sun.
The weekend is only to luxuriate and unwind, to enjoy the solitude and quiet harmony. My dwelling’s interior is exquisite, an aesthetic haven filled with contemporary Nordic design (and an Eames House Bird). My pleasure’s abound, showing great attention to detail: a spicy red wine decanted from an attractive wine breather, filling an elegant and perfect glass; warm light from beautiful lamps, casting just enough glow in which to read a new Danish thriller; discerningly chosen toys keeping me company, their iconic forms ever catching my eye.
Blissful, aware only of my surroundings, at peace. My weekend by the coast.”

“My coastal weekend must, of course, be spend in my beloved coté d’azur! My weekend is full of blue sea, blazing sunshine and all the colours this wonderful region offers us. There are boats, yachts, plenty of green trees and delicious food. Grilled fish is on the menu daily for me and swimming can be done well into the evening, while watching the sunset. If you’re lucky enough to know someone with a yacht, then hop over to my favourite beach: plage mala!
I spent most the time outdoors but it’s always wonderful to come back to the boutique hotel and sit out in their wonderful wild garden. Hanging you will find a row of different shaped and different numbered glass teapots all lit up (lamps) My duck, flamingo and goose (toys) are joining the weekend and recharging some batteries. There is no better place to wear my ring than in glitzy south of france (glass ware).”
Collage: all photographs taken by me. The teapot is hanging in wholefoods, Piccadilly, the fish buttons have been sewn on. The sparkling stickers were bought many years ago. The red material is part of a christmas packaging. Gold and pink elasticated Gütermann threads used for stitching. Flamingo and goose my own (bought from paul smith shop many years ago). The original rubber duck is mine and can be bought on Ebay and some selected retailers. The blue fabric (numbers) is part of my fabric collection.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I could do with such a weekend right now:) I want to thank Gerard for being generous with his time and delighting us with his weekend by the coast.
For those who haven’t come forward yet, please feel free to join in! Vive la différence is back on monday 4th february.
Have a great start to the week and i shall see you back here on thursday. Btw, the 3BOOKS giveaway is still open until sunday.

I’m with you, Cote d’Azur all the way. all that lovely sunshine yes please!
Two very different photos, very interesting. x
Ha. Doing my bit made me book a flight for 48 hrs in Feb!!!
Thanks Tina 🙂 This was cool to do and I always love to see the contrast with your vive la différence segment. We’re quite different then. I think both images show our respective personalities very well. That shot of your duck just makes me smile. Do you think my Eames Bird and your duck would hit it off? I think so.
Gerard xx
Yes, lovely, we are quite different but that’s what’s so great about it… we’re all really expressing our passions, tastes, likes etc, and they are all valid and welcome! That’s what makes the world go round, right??
My duck would Loooveeeeee your Eames Bird. Different but yet the same:))
Thank you for participating. Much appreciated!! x
Love that the results are so sooo different! Very worth celebrating 😉 Would love to join this “inspirational exercise” any time!
Hi Judith. Glad you enjoyed this.
I’d love to have you participate and you’ve just been added to the list. It’ll be in a few months but I’ll be in touch well ahead of schedule. 🙂
I’m sold on both those weekend escapes – so vivid, I was literally transported there as I read, only to find myself sitting in my study again in dark and cold london! I do crave that cote d’Azur sunshine so much.
I see the Wholefoods teapot has finally made its appearance 🙂 xx
Wait for the weather next week. We’ve seen nothing yet!! It’s been quite a mild winter so far.
Ha. Yes, well spotted my dear. I knew it would come handy one day xx
I’m with you, I could really do with a beach getaway right about now. Even though the photos above are very different, they each convey relaxation and time away, which we all desperately need from time to time. Looking forward to the next installment. Who will it be? 😉
Thanks T.
Hi Tina, love both of them. I could do both of these coastal getaways…making me look forward even more to my impending holiday to Bali in a few weeks time! So interesting seeing peoples different tastes and style shine through with each theme. Gerard I love those wine glasses and wine decanter, so beautiful and Tina grilled fish and swimming on the Cote d azur sounds amazing. Congratulations to you both. xx
Bali!!!! Tell me more. How exciting. When, where, how long???
Thanks. It’s nice that you’ve participated and now can see what’s involved! Still look fondly at the Pop-up shop xx
Thanks Tina, me too. xx Will message you the exciting Bali news. xx
Hi Tina, both sound amazing – really can’t decide between the two. Absolutely wonderful photographs, as usual.
Thanks Alison, no need to decide, that’s the fun part.
I want to go on both coastal weekends myself:)
Thanks for your ongoing encouragement!
Oh, I love them both and the toys you both chose are fab! That said, a weekend on the Côte d’Azur? Lunching al fresco in the sunshine?! Yes, please!!! My bones could do with warming up and I fit remarkably well into holdalls. ;)x
I love that Gerard chose ‘toys’.
See below comment to Annie… I think I took my VLD too literate this time:)
Warming up your bones? Well, then good luck in Stockholm with the cold and snow. Very excited for you xx
hello honey! happy new year!
my fantasy weekend by the coast would be a cold, wet one. it has been ridiculously hot here, i’m longing for some cooler weather.
xxx
Happy New Year!
What I’m going to say will sound funny BUT I’m glad you’re back home and I missed you:)) (I think you get that meaning, right?)
I don’t blame you….you guys have had it hot and there’s nothing like a bit of cooling off and some water on your face xx
