Vive La Différence – Air Travel

    June 2, 2014

Hello. We are in June. Wow! Holiday season is upon us. Today we have another Vive la Différence installment. I’ve just noticed that the idea for this series was born exactly 2 years ago. Wow! Take a look at all entries on the Pinterest board. Thank you to EVERYONE who participated.

I’m happy to feature Doris Lee, author of a Diary of an Interior Novice. Doris’ blog is an on-line notebook of her life a she transitions from working in IT into a new career as an Interior Designer. Doris lives with her husband and son in London.

    For new readers:

The concept: each month I will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image/vignette. There are 20 themes and 20 objects for my guest to choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then create an image/vignette based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a drawing, a collage, a hand-painted image, a styled table top… the choice is yours! The fun part is that you, my readers, will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.

Doris chose the theme: Air Travel…. with the objects: Maps, Clothes and Art Supplies.  Here is Doris’ Vignette.

Hello Everyone! When I was invited by Tina to participate in her series Vive La Différence, I was so honoured but also nervous because I knew I would be joining so many esteemed creative people and I’m a big fan of the series.

When I was 12 years old, I had the most vivid dream of my life. I was outside my parents home in Melbourne, Australia, it was night time and I felt a light sensation in my feet. I started to jump on the spot and with each bounce I would get higher and higher into the air until I was well above the roof of the house. I then waved my arms mimicking the wings of a bird and that’s when I started to fly. I remember so clearly, the streets that I passed, the flicker of lights below me as I floated above them and the feeling of freedom I felt. The freedom that I could go anywhere.

Now, whenever I am sitting in a plane as it takes off and I feel that sensation of no longer being on the steady ground during take off, I am reminded of that feeling of freedom and anticipation of going to a new place anywhere in the world. So the vignette I have put together is a representation of all of these feelings. The dress with it’s bird shaped pattern represents flight and the darkness of the night I had experienced in my dream, the maps of the world, that I cut into patches and jumbled represents that I can go anywhere and the painted mini canvas are a representation of freedom.

Thank You Tina, I’ve had so much fun taking part in this creative exercise and I can’t wait to see your interpretation of the topic. xDoris

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with air travel for many years. I’ve been flying from a very young age. In my 20’s I used to take a plane like most people take the underground. I was probably on a plane most days. One day I experienced a massive panic attack mid flight and subsequent events forced me re-evaluate my entire life. It was a blessing in disguise but it also involved a lot of hardship and pain.

Here’s my Vignette and it’s story:

    1. I actually love flying.
    2. It used to feel more glamorous. I would dress up and feel like a movie star. These days it’s about comfort (hence the trainers).
    3. I mostly travel in Europe as I tend to to take short breaks more often.
    4. These days I prefer a 24-48 hours stint to the South of France than a 2 weeks holiday further afield.
    5. I missed out on flying Concorde. Must have been an awesome experience.
    6. My preferred airline is British Airways and Terminal 5 is unbeatable in the UK.
    7. The world has got so much smaller since budget airlines and that’s a good thing.
    8. I’m intrigued by the forthcoming Space travel but it equally terrifies me.
    9. There are yet so many countries for me to experience. I wonder what the next decade will bring.
    10. Maybe one day we can have a blogging retreat and actually charter a whole plane full of bloggers.
    11. I loved painting this map!
    12. The Concorde plane template (slightly adapted) I downloaded from here.
    13. The Adidas miniature trainer I bought as limited edition many years ago.

Thank you Doris for sharing your wonderful dream with us. I shall remember this next time I’m sitting in a plane and waiting for ‘take off’. Glad to have you here.
