    Mini Moderns – Remix

    September 12, 2013

Good evening. Apologies for this slightly delayed post! There is a good reason for it. I wanted to bring you something HOT OFF THE PRESS.

This evening saw the private view of the much anticipated mini moderns‘ design event in the newly opened East London Design Store.

I zoomed down to see and support my talented friends and bring you a little preview of this design extravaganza. For the duration of the london design festival, 14th – 22nd september, you are treated to an exquisite event, aptly called REMIX, which sees the talented brand team up with a select number of designers and artists, supported by the simple things.

The 2013 REMIX project is based largely upon mini moderns’ darjeeling wallpaper design, which was launched this year as part of the Buddha of Suburbia collection. “Fittingly, since the collection celebrates a uniquely London cultural mash-up, we have given Remix collaborators free reign to re-imagine the design on a piece of their choice, asking them to take a fresh look at our pattern and colour collection.” say keith stephenson and mark hampshire, the brains behind the mini modern brand.

    Meet keith and mark.

I love collaborations and this project ticks all the boxes for me. You take a collection and ask a variety of artists and designers to re-interpret it within their own field and come up with a range of products. Now that’s genius, wouldn’t you agree?

The next bit of genius is to print a brochure that explains exactly how mini moderns met the artist or designer and how they responded to the REMIX brief.

The project includes work by zoe murphy and benjamin boyce who chose to use  the range of mini moderns environmentally friendly paint as the basis for their response.

See here below Zoe’s ‘upcycled drawers’. Apart from using the paint, she also lined the drawers with the ‘darjeeling’ wallpaper and fabric.

This next piece is colour accent furniture by furniture maker benjamin boyce . He also used the paint collection as a colour accent. This below is the ‘lean to’ table with special edition blown glass vessels, specially commissioned to match the lido colourway.

One of my favourite pieces was the c-60 accessories by designer and maker daniela gargiulo. Look at these lavender bags, made out of mini moderns c-60 fabric.

I loved the new lighting range, called the MMG lighting collection. Mini moderns here teamed up with group design. Watch out for some of these lights to be included in the mini moderns full range.

Further work comes from artist matt sewell, who hand-crafted these birds. The limited edition set consists of 4 birds, each signed, dated and numbered by matt himself.

There is so much more. The best advise i can give you is to go and see for yourselves and maybe look out for other coverage. Further collaborations were from leonhard pfeifer, rimmington vian, urban upholstery and brume.

The party was in full flow but unfortunately i had to leave, to cook dinner and quickly write up this blog post.

I shall definitely return to take a closer look at this sublime collaboration between this dynamic brand and some rather talented artists and designers.

Mini Moderns Remix at East London Design Store is on 14th-22nd September, open daily 10am till 6pm. Find it at 6a Ada Street, London Fields, London E8 4QU. After this special design event closes, most of mini moderns range of products will be permanently sold at the east london design store.

Oh, and thank you for the wonderful goodie bag!
