Vive La Différence – Craft Class

December 9, 2013

It’s December and this is the last Vive la Différence for 2013. It’s been a fun ride and I’ve loved featuring so many talented bloggers.

Today I’m delighted to introduce you to Giova Brusa whose blog One Bunting Away is about crafty things and crafty people. Giova started off writing the blog with her sister, but now it’s mostly her. She was born in Colombia and now lives in Amsterdam with her husband and their 2 boys.

For new readers:

The concept: each month I will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image/vignette. There are 20 themes and 20 objects for my guest to choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then create an image/vignette based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a drawing, a collage, a hand-painted image, a styled table top… the choice is yours! The fun part is that you, my readers, will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.

Giova chose the theme: Craft Class with the objects: Books, Magazines and Art Supplies – Here’s her take on this.

Thank you so much Tina for inviting me to your lovely blog.

After seeing all the others at “Vive la Difference” I was a bit nervous, but once I saw that the theme “craft class” was there, all I could do was dream of craft classes, what they would be about, what crafts would be made, and what sort of food we would eat, if we even ate at all.

I craft almost everyday. It is what I love doing and if I haven’t done any crafts during the day, I feel it wasn’t a day well spent. Anything counts as craft, whether it is paper crafts, embroidery, crochet, collage, rubber stamps or letter writing.

The only downside to all the crafting that I do, is that it is quite lonely and I don’t actually get to spend much time with fellow crafters.

What you see here is my dining table pretending to be holding a craft class. In that imaginary class there will be endless art supplies, all the crafty magazines out there (for inspiration of course), and various old books to tear through and create new things. All my favorite tools would be there, like; washi-tape, scissors, all types of paper, neon paints, ink pads, doilies, scrap reliefs, erasers, and ribbons.

There will also be tea, lots of cookies, cakes, laughter and endless chatting. And a big pile of mess everywhere because that is how I get the most inspired.

Thank you again Tina for allowing me to dream the perfect craft class, and to share it with your readers.

The best Christmas wishes to all of you! Giova

___________________________________________________________________________________

When Giova chose Craft Class I was secretly happy because it’s the time of year I start thinking about my Christmas cards. I have a rather large list of people I send one to, so tend to divide it into the following: I make a number of hand-made cards (mostly for those that appreciate the effort:-), I have a list of people that get shop bought cards (with a personal touch) and last but not least, I design an online e-card I sent out to many.

Every year I enjoy plotting my Christmas cards and this year I knew exactly what I’d be doing for the hand-made version. I’ve been collecting cards by artist and fellow blogger Alison Sye for a while now. Alison scavenges the skips of London looking for abandoned treasures to resuscitate and make into beautiful cards. My collection is growing and I cannot bear to part with them. When Alison was selling a particular card (one I already owned and loved) for a juicy discount, I grabbed the whole lot (or almost) with the thought in mind that I could personalise them for Christmas. (I asked Alison for permission).

Here’s my craft class, an actual one, as I go about personalising each card before I send it to the receiver. It’s getting rather late as each one takes a long time to do. I tend to work in the evenings and into the night and will have to do so for a bit if I want them to get to people before Christmas. I love doing them and I hope that people will love receiving them.

Thank you Giova for being part of the VLD experience and for sharing your imaginary craft class. I love: “I craft almost everyday. It is what I love doing and if I haven’t done any crafts during the day, I feel it wasn’t a day well spent.” What a beautiful thing to do every day.

To all my readers and all of you that support Vive la Différence here on Colourliving, a million thanks. We’re signing off for the year and look forward to seeing you again here in 2014 when I will have more fab bloggers showing off their talents.

    Hello Giova and Tina,
What a lovely post – and Merry Christmas to you both, too.

Giova – I took a peek at your blog, it’s wonderful and I’m now following via email. I would like to be sitting at your table making things from endless supplies of stuff – and I love the lots of laughter part. Lovely to meet you.

Tina – I’m honoured that you featured my work once again, and love what you have done to those postcards. I an thrilled by the idea of things evolving and being added to, it’s what I do in the first place, afterall. Thank you for introducing me to yet another kindred spirit. I laughed when you called me ‘fellow blogger’, as you know I am a blogger by accident, I still don’t consider myself worthy of being called a blogger, and am in denial!

Seasons greeting and all, and I look forward to more VLDs in 2014.

Thank you for all your support throughout the year and for making such beautiful cards.

Alison’s cards are really charming. They are all so unique and tell the most wonderful stories. I wish I could own them all…

      Thanks Caroline:-)
Yes, that would be great. You keep threatening us with it:-)) Look forward to it xx

Your imaginary craft class sounds wonderful Giova. Have you ever thought of running some craft classes? It would be a great way to meet likeminded crafters and maybe make a little bit of money for your craft supplies. My cousin and a friend have been running some here in Melbourne called “Lets Make Something Awesome” and they have been a big success.

Love Alison’s cards Tina, she is so talented and your personalised touches are lovely, I can’t wait to receive my card as I loved last years. I must make some Christmas cards next year too. Thanks for VLD this year it’s been inspiring and I look forward to what’s in store for next year. xx

What a good idea…. “Lets Make Something Awesome” sounds, err awesome!! (excuse the pun!)

I received your card this morning in the post. Thank you lovely. Do you know Moo.com ? It would be wonderful for you to print some cards with some
of your beautifully styled food on it. Great marketing too:-)

Thank for your ongoing support of the VLD series… much appreciated xx

      • Reply Catherine Bedson December 10, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Great idea, was thinking of something similar myself but didn’t know about moo.com. Thanks Tina will have a look. x

        • Reply tina December 11, 2013 at 7:05 pm

The great thing about Moo is that they have infinity printing. So if you order, let’s say, 50 cards, each card can have a different image on it… it’s magic!
          xx

Both takes on ‘craft class’ are amazing. I like the idea of an imaginary class and Giova’s picture is just how I would imagine it – lots of different materials to see where creativity leads. Alison’s cards look so stunning and I’m so ashamed of my ordinary, bought cards now 😉 The amount of time, creativity, imagination and work that goes into these must be huge and anybody receiving one of these should indeed feel honoured.

A fab way to end this year’s series of VLD and thanks so much for making me a part of it. xo

    • Reply tina December 10, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Haha. I would love to join Giova’s imaginary crafts class and make something that I’ve never made before…

People, I didn’t post Alison’s cards or my add ons! to make anyone feel that their bought cards are inferior. I also have shop bought cards and supplement with a few home-made ones. They do take a lot of time but equally are very satisfying…. everything goes. It’s the thought that counts….

Pleasure lovely and I hope you’ll come back to see what others will choose in next year’s VLD themes. xx

I love that both approaches are very colourful and happy! I only wish I had a bit more talent and time for crafting.

    • Reply tina December 10, 2013 at 7:31 pm

They are certainly ‘Happy’ Mr Happy:-)
You know, you might surprise yourself if you tried… one day we’ll get you to a craft class and it will called:
the Happy Craft Class, right Giova?

Thanks for your continued support of this series Igor!

  • Reply Giova Brusa December 10, 2013 at 5:15 pm

Thank you Carole and Catherine for your lovely words.
I haven’t heard about “Let’s make something awesome,” but will do so very soon.

My Christmas cards are here: (http://onebuntingaway.blogspot.nl/2013/11/ideas-for-handmade-christmas-gifts.html), but like you Tina, I only make a a few. In the end whether you found the time to make them or not, what matters is that you remember to send a card.

So Igor, I’m sure with your taste, you’ll find really nice cards to send to your friends and they’ll be really happy to receive them!!

    • Reply tina December 10, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Giova, your Christmas cards ARE BEAUTIFUL and you put me to shame….. thank you for sharing!

It’s hard doing many, I totally agree, but in the end, it’s all about the ‘giving’, as you so rightly mentioned.
Any card, any thought is very welcome, so to those who are not getting the hand-made ones, please don’t be offended:-)

  • Reply Holly December 11, 2013 at 12:26 pm

Both these images make me want to leave what I’m doing and jump into craft class. I must get craftier!

I really Like Giova’S BELIEVE bunting – with the neon lettering and the book page triangles, really lovely.

And I recognize those cards Tina! They’re so beautiful! Which remids me I have to share my own Alison Sye cards before I send them off…

Nice interpretations from both you ladies, and I look forward to VLD 2014 🙂

    Xx.

      Hey you.

I say this every time I make something… why can I not make stuff all the time and then I realise how time consuming it is
and how addictive it can be… and so I pack away my craft things.

Isn’t the Bunting just the bomb? yes, very talented!

Hahaha. Did I show you all my Alison Sye collection when you stayed with me? I’m delighted you bought some…I know of one that you bought.

VLD 2014…. bring it on!!! xx

    • Reply Giova Brusa December 12, 2013 at 1:18 pm

      Thank you so much Holly!!
It is quite consuming Tina, you are right, but very rewarding and you should be super proud of your cards, they are lovely!! I would love to see your Alison collection!

  • Reply Doris December 11, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Wow I love both versions! Tina, I am so amazed at how much detail is spent on your cards and they look wonderful. Have a wonderful Christmas everyone. xD

  • Reply Judith December 13, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Where do I sign up for your imaginary craft classes, Giova?!
I love both your creative & messy (in a good way!) craft tables. Of course crafting is time consuming, but it makes receiving a card even more valuable.
Congratulations, Tina, on an entire year of VLD! Here’s to VLD in 2014!! xx

    Aww, I LOVE this!

I really enjoy making things with my little L. We make something everyday, too and it’s such fun when you’re not hung up on results or perfection.

Making cards together is a fairly new tradition of ours and a great way to show family and friends how her creativity/dexterity is evolving.

Well done, ladies and three cheers for VLD 2013! I’m sure 2014’s will be even more inspiring. 😀 xo
