Vive La Différence – Babette’s Feast

August 16, 2012

I am very excited to announce a new monthly series; vive la differénce!

Some of you might remember a post i did with holly where we designed a modern abode for tweety pie, our ficticious client:). It was just a bit of fun but an idea was born. I’d been thinking for ages how to incorporate guest blogging onto my site, so all that was needed was to work out the details.

Let me introduce the concept: each month i will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image. There are 20 themes and 20 objects my guest can choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then also create an image based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a line drawing, a collage, a hand painted image, a styled table top, the choice is yours! The fun part is that you guys will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.

For this first one i’m really happy to introduce sue from a nomadic abode. In fact, let sue introduce herself:

Hi, i’m sue & i author a nomadic abode… as the name suggests, i’m a bit of a free spirit with a wandering heart & a heck of a lot of experience setting up home from scratch… i’m so happy to at long last be carving out my own little niche in this crazy big world of design… & wherever this journey takes me, i promise to bring both spirit & soul in abundance…

After showing sue the list of themes and objects she chose: babette’s feast together with flowers, fabric and jewellery.

Here are the results.

babette’s feast: decadence & beauty intertwined…
old world lace & simple linens combine to create a sumptuous backdrop to a feast of fruits & flora interspersed amongst jewel-adorned table tops… trinket boxes overspill with edible offerings whilst an intoxicating blend of hydrangea, peonies, roses, gelda & berries conspire to delight…

Vive la Différence - Babette's Feast - Sue

babette’s feast: a modern version…
flowers made of fabric, austerity tamed decadence….playful, inexpensive jewellery…a caraffe with water and mint…colourful teaware replaces silverware….bread and prawns….intertwining curly parsley with ribbons..

I hope you like this new series and i’d like to invite you guys to let me know if you’re up to the challenge:) here’s what sue wrote to me when submitting her fabulous image: “wow, that was a marathon! who knew there could be so much involved… i’ve had a blast though, and here are the fruits of my labour…”

Fruits of labour, indeed!! Thank you so much sue for giving your time and inspiring my readers and for challenging me:)

Now, of course, i would like all of you to jump at this. I would particularly like one of my male readers to accept this challenge. Well, let’s see. Please let me know in the comments if you fancy a go at this! I look forward to seeing you back on monday. I have 2 really special posts about my trip to germany. Thank you for all the lovely wishes and fantastic comments last week. x

This is so fun! It’s really amazing to see the differences, but seeing the similarities is also super interesting. The style clearly makes the difference here, but the feeling of abundance and enjoyment is present in both. I’m amazed at the colour similarities too. The purply-pinks … just fab!

I’m so glad you pursued this idea as a monthly series. And nice to meet Sue here.

    Vive la differénce!

Unfortunately, I’ve never seen Babette’s Feast. Now I think I will have to 😉

It’s the sign of an creatively evolved person who can see the similarities and differences in both and hold that! Thanks darling x

Now go and rent Babette’s Feast!

Well, this is fantastic. Tina, leave it to you to find such an interesting angle. Both of your photos and theme interpretations came out so good. Moving forward, it’s going to be so interesting to see how you and the guest will interpret the theme. I cannot wait to see how this series grows and builds…Hm, wonder if I can perform such a challenge. 😉 I would definitely like to see a male get involved. Well done, Tina!

Yes, I’m also curious to see where this goes from here. The possibilities are endless and I hope it grows and grows.

OF COURSE you can do this, silly billy. I’ll tell you what. Let’s wait a few month and then I’ll be knocking at your door. When you see the next few themes you’ll feel like you want to join in:)

I love this concept Tina. Very clever. Wonderful post & well interpreted theme from both of you.

And I am up for the challenge (one of your lovely male readers) 😉

    Hugs Gerard xx

      Hello male star!!!

No pressure!! Everyone is awaiting with anticipation what you’ll do! I’m surprised Igor didn’t come forward. Hmmm, might not let him off the hook this easy. I’ll grab him in London and won’t let him go until he gives in:)

Thanks love, really appreciate your support in fulfilling my wish of having a male blogger take up the challenge. And an Irish one too:)
      Expect an email….. xx

    The abundance is wonderful!

And a very clever idea. To have thought of 20 themes and 20 ideas is abundant in itself.

Will now have to rush over and see Sue’s website, many thanks x

Thank you Nicola. Glad you like!!! Thank you for the lovely afternoon tea xx

What an engaging idea, Tina! I appreciate how perspective is the focus. It’s funny how our individual experiences shape an idea. I’ve been following Sue for a while now, so this is wonderful seeing her featured here. I’d love to participate too. Thanks.

    • Reply tina August 20, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Christine, how great you want to join. Yes, it’s a lot about our experiences and who we are, I suppose.
I’ll be in touch and I look forward to having you here on my blog x

I’ve not seen Babette’s Feast but it sounds multi-layered and intriguing.

What a fantastic guest post idea, Tina! I’d love to take part but could I please go a few months later? Gentlemen first!!! ;D

You’ve done so well, ladies – I love the colours you chose. 🙂
Talk about a labour of love! I can only imagine how much effort and thought must have gone into each of your vignettes.
I’m hopeless at styling still lifes but I do like the challenge. *famous last words*

As a foodie I think you’ll love Babette’s Feast! I saw it when it first came out in the late 80’s and it’s left a mark on me ever since. It’s a beautiful tale!

Of course you can join later… whenever it suits you! Yes, indeed! Gentlemen first in this case…
You’ll be fine Chi, styling or not styling. You can choose a theme and do an illustration. The choice is completely yours. No pressure!

      Let’s discuss in a few months x

What a wonderful idea, I really enjoyed the post on tweetie pie’s modern abode and think it’s fantastic that you’ve decided to make it into a monthly feature.

I love both of your interpretations of Babette’s Feast, so different but equally beautiful, the colours and compositions are stunning.

Please could I put my name down too, it’s a little daunting but I would love the opportunity to take part!

Thanks for the introduction to the film and also to Sue, another lovely blog for my list 🙂 x

    • Reply tina August 20, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Yes, funny how these things happen, right? I’m glad it happened like that.

I’m delighted you’re joining into the fun. It feels daunting but it won’t be once you choose a theme that speaks to you. The ideas will flow, I promise you!!
Hope your having a good time x

Sue are those really all your flowers? Are some of them Ahernia??? The photo is stunning, very reanaissance. And Tina it’s interesting to see a more modern interpretation. I’ve never heard of the film either but it looks interesting so I think I’m going to have to check it out.

Looking forward to Gerard’s too, especially as he’s a stylist by trade!

    • Reply sue August 20, 2012 at 11:42 am

errrm… yes, all my flowers… but in my defence one of the bunches is actually real and was a fortuitously-timed leaving gift from my internship! all the others are ahernia and probably combined cost more than my first car, or second car, or third car for that matter! i really like tina’s modern interpretation too as i genuinely wouldn’t know where to start… guess i’m an old soul afterall!

    • Reply tina August 20, 2012 at 3:58 pm

      It’s a fantastic film!!

There’s no need to be a stylist to do this. Anyone can do it!
