Urban Jungle Bloggers – On the Roof Terrace

April 24, 2014

This is my second time joining the #urbanjunglebloggers adventure. See my first one here.

Urban Jungle Bloggers is a monthly series, devised by Igor and Judith. The idea is to get some green into our homes, especially for us urban folks! Every month they invite bloggers to share ideas for creating an urban jungle through styling challenges, DIYs, green tips and tricks. Every month there is a different theme on the topic. You can follow and get more urban jungle bloggers inspiration on Pinterest and on Facebook.

April’s theme is: “Show your green balcony or window sill” Err, I checked with the organisers, apparently having a roof terrace is allowed:-) Phew!

Disclaimer: Before I start, can I just confess that my roof terrace has not yet been jet cleaned or properly spruced up to welcome visitors, that would be all of you dear readers! So, some strategic and excluding photography has been necessary.

Apart from that, please join me on ‘la terrace’ and make yourself comfortable.

‘I don’t particularly have green fingers’. How many times have we heard this and how many times have I used this sentence myself. I can tell you now, it’s RUBBISH! Like most things in life it’s simply got to do with trial and error, failure and success, confidence and courage. So, a plant died, a flower wilted, the herbs didn’t make it….. try again. Well, at least that’s what I did!

I’m by no means an expert or brilliant at it but I’m learning, feeling more confident and starting to see results. That fear of ‘I better not touch anything green, well only in the kitchen’ has vanished!

I’m fussy about plant pots. Being on a terrace you’re also always aware of the weight and in general I like moving things around. One of my favourite containers are the brilliantly designed Bacsac. I came across them a few years ago and haven’t looked back. ‘It’s a weightless and portable bag that follows you everywhere, inside the house, outside on the terrace, the balcony or in the garden.’ Flexible, durable, it maintains the necessary balance between air, soil and water and is frost and sun resistant. It comes in many sizes and now it even comes in colours, yay!!!

Depending what I plant in them is how long they will last and whether they survive the winter. Last year I had a lot of mint and fennel in them which doesn’t make it through winter. Thinking about what to plant this year, I chose some spanish Marguerite and mixed it up with some lemon thyme. Because I cook so much and constantly use herbs, the second container here has Tarragon, Oregano and another variety of thyme. I can never get enough of fresh herbs, can you?

Last year I found this gorgeous tin oil drum which has become my main herb garden. I’m really proud that all the herbs came back this year. With the exception of chives, everything else survived well and as you can see is thriving. I’m hoping that the strawberry plant I have in there will also revive later on in the year.

Finally, in the spirit of creativity and re-purposing I love using containers like these sample dulux  paint pots here below. When empty, put a few holes in the bottom. I like to cover them with parchment paper or fabric and hold it all together with different ribbons. Then I plant them with some flowers like these straggling Discia plants. There is nothing nicer than placing one of these next to each place setting when serving guests lunch or dinner. Beats any center floral arrangement in my opinion!

Some have lasted, others haven’t but it’s a fun and inexpensive way to bring some blooms in or out and cheer up any abode.

Can anyone tell me the name of this plant below. It’s rather beautiful.

I suspect there’s quite a few people joining in April so why not hop over on Twitter or Instagram, look for #urbanjunglebloggers and show them some love!

What a fantastic roof terrace, Tina! I must make it one day up there! I love all your plants and herbs and the container mix is really eye-catching. That oil drum is fabulous!! Thank you so much for joining our growing green family & spreading the green love!

Ha. Thank you Igor. We were so close, weren’t we, and then last minute it didn’t happen. Hopefully it will still happen this year!

I like mixing things up, it keeps the eye guessing. The oil drum is corroding but I quite like that look.
It’s always a pleasure to join the #urbanjunglebloggers family!

Your roof top looks wonderful, Tina! I’m very curious about the view though 😉 And I totally agree with you: not having a green thumb is rubbish. It’s all about trial & error, confidence and a just-do-it mentality. Very glad that you’re part of our green family <3

Merci Judith. To be honest, I cannot wait for summer. i LOVE BBQ’d food, nothing beats it for me. To sit outside with a cup of tea and read magazines or books is just priceless!

Nice to join you guys x

Love your terrace, and that afternoon light hitting it, quite sublime.
My favorite is that big oil drum, absolutely stunning.

Thank you Giova. Actually it was the early morning sunrise:-)…. I have sun all day round which sometimes can be too much… you know the grass is always greener et cetera.

Haha, yes, that oil drum was a bit of a winner:-))

Gorgeous lovely! Your tin planter is to die for and the bags are brilliant-I saw them last year at one f the fairs-really great. How fab to have a roof terrace in town-the perfect urban dwelling! xx

Aww, thanks lovely. Yes, they exhibited at ‘Home’ in Earls Court. That’s where I saw the coloured ones…
Ha. I know and believe me I’m greatful for it every day. You must come round for a visit xx

Your little roof terrace is beautiful. Love all the herbs, and how you transformed that oil tin drum. Such a great idea!

    • Reply tina April 24, 2014 at 9:01 pm

Thank you Sarah. You have nice herbs too, makes such a difference when cooking. Love it!

Oh wow, Tina! Your terrace looks gorgeous and the lighting is beautiful, so soft and warm. I haven’t tried the little bags since they would probably melt like everything else here in the summer. I prefer clay pots or ceramic and appreciate the little bags, they are so cute and easy to change in and out. It was a pleasure to see your green space, I am with Igor…one day I would love to see it in person! Have a lovely day! Big hug, Jocelyn xx

    • Reply tina April 24, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Thank you Jocelyn. Not quite like yours but for being in the middle of London it’s fantastic!

Ha. yes, you’re in the desert! Those bags would be no good for you.
Depending where, I also like clay or ceramics but I feel the bags suit my terrace and it’s so easy to move them around.

Of course, you’re invited anytime xx

Love your choice of plants! And using the oil drum as a herb garden is wonderful…

    • Reply tina April 24, 2014 at 9:05 pm

Thank you Yvonne. I was thinking what I could use as a herb garden and when I saw the oil drum I knew that was it….:-)

  • Reply Mel April 25, 2014 at 3:38 am

Oh Tina you out did yourself here, what an amazing bunch of green and in such interesting planters. I love how you have planted the herbs amongst flowers in the pots, I see it in a garden bed yet never in planters. The drum is perfect and I hope that to see some strawberries in future posts…. (thought they were annuals though?). Oh and that bird bath!! The terrace looks very much complete to me – but if you say so… When I finally make it to London, I hope to share a vino there with you so get cracking. M xx

    • Reply tina April 25, 2014 at 5:55 pm

Ta very much luv:-) Yes, strawberries are annual and I have a small plant. Really curious to see whether it will come back…

That’s actually a fountain with running water. I just love the sound of trickling water. As it’s still April I haven’t attached the pump yet. Mad isn’t it?
I do, however, also have a bird bath:-)

Ha. You’ll be guest of honour all the way from Auckland! xx

Ok, I need to move. I know. The series is killing me this time. I didn’t participate because an outdoor space in Barcelona, even a window sill is something rather precious.
The 1st pic of yours, is like..oh my…amazing little paradise you are having there, Tina! Wonderful pictures! You always surprise me! xx

    • Reply tina April 25, 2014 at 5:59 pm

Oh Gudy, living in Barcelona must be so exciting with or without outside space:-)
I am really greatful for my outside space and view. I never take it for granted.

Ha, I like that I surprise you.. keeps it more interesting! Happy weekend x

Wow. That is one gorgeous outside space. So full of life and colour. I’m thinking I’d like to pitch a tent up there and spend some time admiring all those gorgeous plants (and the views). That first shot has the most lovely light in it. Jx

Well, thank you Jill. I like that you say: “So full of life and colour’.

Tina, your terrace is amazing! I absolutely love that oil drum and your herbs have come back really well. I really like that you repurposed the paint cans also, I might give it a try. I need more pots! I really enjoyed the tour, thanks. xD

    • Reply tina April 28, 2014 at 12:44 am

Thank you Doris. It’s getting there. I find it takes me ages as I try to create more layers… the season to enjoy it is short.

When I bought the oil drum I thought I might want another one. When I went back (a couple of weeks later) they were all gone. One of those great finds!
Do give the paint cans a try. I’m also experimenting with larger ones and dipping them in paint. It’s all good fun really! BTW, I also need more pots!
Glad you enjoyed the tour… you are always welcome to come for a visit x

    Hi Tina,

I’m loving your roof terrace! All the pots you’ve used are great, but my favourite is the old oil drum. What a find!

    You’re such a talented photographer.

I’ve signed up for the urban jungle bloggers challenge this week after reading Interior Novice’s post, so, I believe, I’ll get my instructions for May.

    Best wishes
    Monika

If you’ve signed up, I have no doubt that Igor and Judith will send you the May instructions.
      Thanks.

Lovely to have a peak at your roof terrace, I love the idea of that for summer BBQs and relaxing. Like Judith though, I’m intrigued to know what the view’s like!

A fab selection of plants, flowers and herbs. I particularly like your herb garden in the oil drum, ingenious idea and very effective. Another great #urbanjunglebloggers post!

    Have a great week! Hollie
