Last Sunday, families and friends of people working for and with The Design Museum were granted a special pre-launch visit ahead of it’s grand opening on the 24th November.
It was exciting to go and see the New Design Museum, which no doubt will become the world’s leading museum of contemporary design and architecture promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of design talent.
Build on the former Grade II listed Commonwealth Institute, the prominent address “Kensington High Street’ is befitting of such a beautiful and classy building, designed by architect John Pawson.
The building when you walk in is impressive. The atrium, the different levels, the architecture and materials used are sublime. What struck me most was the many spaces for mingling, education, research. As well as housing all staff, there’s also a research library, open to all and free of charge to use. There you’ll find many design magazines and books for everyone to enjoy.
Not all exhibitions were complete and in order not to reveal ahead of opening, I’m not going to talk about what you will find when you visit. Suffice to say that one of my favourite aspects was the forthcoming exhibition by Morag Myerscough. Years in the making I’m sure it will be magnificent and I can’t wait to visit when it officially opens.
A sneak peek of another exhibition. I cannot say anymore.
All I will say is that since Sunday I’ve been thinking a lot about the building, the fabulous new shop, the educational aspect, the way the building interacted with us visitors and the location. As a designer I’m sure I will visit often and look forward for the world to experience another fantastic museum in our world city that we can be proud of.
