The Makers House – Burberry and The New Craftsmen

    September 26, 2016

I was blown away when visiting The Makers House, a collaboration between Burberry and The New Craftsmen.

A great idea, incredible venue, stunning execution and a total success makes this event the must show of 2016. Burberry staged their Fashion Show on the 19th September and the very next day opened the door to The Makers House to the public. You’ll find a mini version of their flagship store café Thomas’s and a selection of Britain’s finest craft makers. There’s also a changing programme of various activities and installations.

The day I visited there was sculpting, embroidery and calligraphy. There’s a whole room dedicated to the inspiration behind the new collection, which takes inspiration from Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. There’s also a shop, where you can buy many of the maker’s wares.

All that is on the ground floor. Walking up the staircase there’s the entire collection that featured in the Fashion Show on display. Although (apparently) most of it has been sold, the pieces are on public display until the end of the show.
I was told that Burberry, with this new collection, were the first Fashion house in history to have both men and women walk down the catwalk together. Wow, took until 2016…

Burberry is known for it’s British craftsmanship and hand finishing of their garments. This event made me sit up and listen. I definitely saw Burberry with different eyes and teaming up with The New Craftsmen (who I am a big fan of), just confirmed that the old days of thinking it’s only for ‘chavs’ is well and truly behind them.

Bravo to an amazing event. It was emotive, seductive and touched all the senses. I could have stayed even longer had they not closed at 7pm.
You have till Tuesday 27th September, when unfortunately The Makers House closes its doors. I wish it would be a permanent fixture and I’m sure I’m not the only one!
