Vive La Différence – The Simple Life

January 13, 2014

This is the first Vive la Différence post in 2014 and I can’t wait to introduce more fabulous and talented bloggers!

First up, all the way from Barcelona, is Gudy Herder, the author of Eclectic Trends. Gudy is an interiors stylist, international trainer for visual merchandising, trend observer and passionate ceramist. Gudy was born in Germany and has been living in Barcelona for the past 25  years.

For new readers:

The concept: each month I will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image/vignette. There are 20 themes and 20 objects for my guest to choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then create an image/vignette based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a drawing, a collage, a hand-painted image, a styled table top… the choice is yours! The fun part is that you, my readers, will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.

Gudy chose the theme: The Simple Life with the objects: Fabrics, Food and Flowers  Here is Gudy’s Vignette.

I like this series a lot. When Tina asked me to participate I was more than happy since Vive la Différence includes a styling concept and the surprise factor not knowing what she will come up with.

I have chosen The Simple Life because this is what I am longing for. A simpler life in every sense, starting by getting a bubbling mind focussed and concentrated on a few and real things. I had worked already with a slow concept and wanted to break down this time what simplicity and joy means to me.

There are flowers, of course. Sometimes fresh, picked up or just dried. It’s so good to be surrounded by nature when you live in an urban environment as I do.

Food is another passion of mine, I really like good food. Not necessarily only the gourmet style but honest cabbages, courgettes and cauliflowers are just perfect for this time of the year.

So, why not combining them by creating a moody flower veggie theme?

Tina, thank you so much for inviting me to this fun contribution! Wishing you and your readers a mindful and very happy 2014!

The Simple Life could not be more perfect for this time of the year and for 2014. Apparently the theme for this year is ‘Mindful Living’. Talking about stripping it back, well I went right back to the beginning, right back to Adam and Eve.

I used some sparkly gold bookbinding cloth (as fabric) and painted the tress, layering them with some Japanese Decorative Paper (leaves), some gold glitter large circle stickers by Inkkit (cut out as leaves and then used the remnant as a kind of sun like shape, representing my flowers ).

The red squiggle on the left bottom is meant to be a hint of a snake! I had some green sparkly stones over from mt Xmas cards. The Adam and Eve drawing/painting I found on the internet, but there was no reference to it. (Apologies to the artist)

The apple represents my food object. And then there is a LOT of Photoshop to create the moody feel. The original was very bright, gold and sparkly and I wanted it to work in more harmony with Gudy’s image.

Thank you Gudy for starting off VLD in 2014. I’m already feeling calmer, thanks to the choice of theme and your image. May this feeling last for the rest of the year. I love the title: moody flower veggie theme…. great!

Stay tuned for the next instalment on February 10th. Happy week everyone!

Lovely feel for both versions, quite different and yet they compliment each others.
    Great start to the year!!

    • Reply Gudy Herder January 13, 2014 at 3:20 pm

This is exactly what I liked about it too! Tina just nailed it with a similar colour palette but truly different style.

Thank you Giova. Glad you enjoyed it…Gudy did a great job so had to think outside the box:-)

I really enjoyed reading about the creative thinking processes that led to the concepts for the two images. And the resulting images are great!

    • Reply tina January 13, 2014 at 11:22 pm

Hi Sarah. Thank you. We both enjoyed doing them!

  • Reply Lena January 13, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Brilliant, ladies – both of you! Gudy, you’re getting better and better at this moody thing. You created a piece of art here!
And I love your Adam and Eve theme here, Tina. It works really well with the “simple life” motto for me.

    • Reply Gudy Herder January 13, 2014 at 3:21 pm

Thanks Lena, I appreciate. And Tina made it really easy. Your theme was brilliant too by the way, not just saying but it’s been one of my favorite issues of the series.

    • Reply tina January 13, 2014 at 11:23 pm

Hi Lena. Another VLD veteran… Yes, I saw some of Gudy’s moody shots on IG, they are really beautiful!
      Thanks, happy you like them:-)

  • Reply Holly January 13, 2014 at 9:13 pm

Wow! Both such striking vignettes! Although I do get the simple life feeling from them both, they are also both so rich! The colours, the subjects … just really rich – that’s the word that just occupies my mind looking at them.

This series is developing in such a nice way. I think you should make this series into a book at some pont. Would be such a great book!

Happy to meet Gudy! Really liking her “What do bloggers collect” series 🙂

Nice job ladies and thank you for sharing with us. Happy 2014 to you too!

    Xx.

    • Reply tina January 13, 2014 at 11:28 pm

      Hey Holly.

I think ‘rich’ is a good word.. simple can mean various things…
Aww, it all started with you (seems an eternity ago)

Thank you, not sure about the Book, would have to have a think BUT definitely think that Gudy’s Bloggers Collect series does. It’s a fantastic series..

      Thanks lovely xx

Hi Gudy – love what you’ve done here. Very simple, clean and a great mood effect. And Tina – always love to see what you’ll do in return. Cool concept (tho you must have been covered in glitter). Setting my feelings on Adam & Eve aside, it’s a wonderfully moody rendering that works so well with Gudy’s image. And Adam does look cute from behind 😉

Did you spray paint the cauliflower Gudy? Haven’t seen one that colour before.

    Thanks both xx

    • Reply Gudy Herder January 14, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Hi Gerard, thank you for the comment! Nope, that is just a different type of cauliflower we have during this season over here in Spain. It’s kind of a mix between the white cauliflower and broccoli. Yeah, I would love Tina seeing too after her creative sessions:-)

    • Reply tina January 16, 2014 at 8:43 am

Ah, Ha. Glad you liked Adam’s derrier and were able to set aside your feelings on the Adam and Eve:-)) phew!!!!

Gudy did such a wonderful image on the ‘Simple Life’ with Food, Fabric and Flowers that I was a little stuck with what to do;-)I’m really glad I decided to follow the gorgeous colour palette. I needed to strip it back even further….

I wasn’t covered in glitter but stupidly I covered an A3 board and now most of it is cut out as the image is only 600×600 pixels.

Gudy already explained the Cauliflower. Personally, I don’t like the white ones so always buy the green ones which you’ll find in farmers markets but not usually in supermarkets.

      Glad you enjoyed it xx

Good choice Gudy. I really enjoy both of your interpretations! Gudy the still life soooo dramatic and styled to perfection. It’s a nice resolution to bring the bubbly mind focused on a few things and sounds most tempting. Tina a great collage and clever choice of Adam and Eve… and perhaps a hint of the rebel in you? Mel x

    • Reply tina January 16, 2014 at 8:45 am

Thanks Mel. A hint of the rebel in me? What makes you say that? Haha. You could be right!!!!

I love the simplicity and moodiness of Gudi’s and the colours are stunning! x

What a wonderful start to the year! I love both as usual, Gudy the idea of using the courgette for a vase is fab! Tina the Adam and Eve concept is so creative! xx

      Hello you. Welcome back….
      Thank you….

I know the idea of using a courgette as vase was genius!

Hope to see you soon lovely xx

BRAVO lovely ladies – I adore you both, and this kicks of the new year by raising the bar – I think both interpretations were fantastic, and I look forward catching up with you both soon, in some capital city in Europe. Much love Axx

Oh, Alison, thank you so much. Tina is a true networker, I totally agree with you!

  • Reply Chi@106 January 15, 2014 at 9:28 pm

Ah, love the theme ladies! You’ve each interpreted it brilliantly – the glam-yet-earthy feel of both vignettes really does appeal to me. 😀

P.S. Is it my imagination or have you given the blog a subtle, little tweak or two? It’s always looked great to me, anyway! 😉 x

    • Reply tina January 16, 2014 at 8:55 am

Thank you Chi and welcome back!!

Never thought of it like that… But ‘glam-yet-earthy feel’ is a very nice description, thank you.

Thank you for noticing. I have made changes to font and colour. To be honest, I absolutely hated my font for more than a year, but 2013 was so busy, I never got round to specifying to Zoe. Then it was done in a couple of tweaks and I’m kicking myself for not doing it earlier.
Glad it looked ok to people and they might not have noticed. I’m so much happier with the changes. It’s more aligned with the content. thanks Chi xx

I know I have said this before AND I will say it again, this is my favorite series, Tina. I love how you mention there is no right or wrong, just different. Gudy, your piece is wonderful! I can relate to the desire for simplicity in life. When I saw the cauliflower there I was reminded of “grounding” or “rooting” myself into my own life and principles so thank you for that.

Tina, yours is full of textures and depth…I love it. Both of you ladies have a beautiful imagination and I can feel the sincerity in every word. This post makes me happy…

      Hi Jocelyn.

Thank you for being such a fan of this series…I’m glad people enjoy it and feel connected with it. My desire for this was always ro show 2 different versions on the same theme but it was also meant to show people that there’s no right or wrong, just different. The same principle applies to life!

I like your interpretation of the pieces. xx

    • Reply Gudy Herder January 16, 2014 at 8:55 pm

I think you pretty much nailed it with your comment, Jocelyn. Isn’t she so right, Tina?
And no right or wrong applies to pretty much everything, I believe. Good point on that!
