Vive La Différence – Air Travel

June 2, 2014

Hello. We are in June. Wow! Holiday season is upon us. Today we have another Vive la Différence installment. I’ve just noticed that the idea for this series was born exactly 2 years ago. Wow! Take a look at all entries on the Pinterest board. Thank you to EVERYONE who participated.

I’m happy to feature Doris Lee, author of a Diary of an Interior Novice. Doris’ blog is an on-line notebook of her life a she transitions from working in IT into a new career as an Interior Designer. Doris lives with her husband and son in London.

For new readers:

The concept: each month I will invite one blogger. They will create and showcase one image/vignette. There are 20 themes and 20 objects for my guest to choose from. They choose 1 theme and up to 3 objects. I will then create an image/vignette based on their choice. Everyone has free reign on how to create the image. It can be simple photography, a drawing, a collage, a hand-painted image, a styled table top… the choice is yours! The fun part is that you, my readers, will see 2 versions inspired by the same subject matter. There is no right or wrong. There’s just ‘different’.

Doris chose the theme: Air Travel…. with the objects: Maps, Clothes and Art Supplies.  Here is Doris’ Vignette.

Hello Everyone! When I was invited by Tina to participate in her series Vive La Différence, I was so honoured but also nervous because I knew I would be joining so many esteemed creative people and I’m a big fan of the series.

When I was 12 years old, I had the most vivid dream of my life. I was outside my parents home in Melbourne, Australia, it was night time and I felt a light sensation in my feet. I started to jump on the spot and with each bounce I would get higher and higher into the air until I was well above the roof of the house. I then waved my arms mimicking the wings of a bird and that’s when I started to fly. I remember so clearly, the streets that I passed, the flicker of lights below me as I floated above them and the feeling of freedom I felt. The freedom that I could go anywhere.

Now, whenever I am sitting in a plane as it takes off and I feel that sensation of no longer being on the steady ground during take off, I am reminded of that feeling of freedom and anticipation of going to a new place anywhere in the world. So the vignette I have put together is a representation of all of these feelings. The dress with it’s bird shaped pattern represents flight and the darkness of the night I had experienced in my dream, the maps of the world, that I cut into patches and jumbled represents that I can go anywhere and the painted mini canvas are a representation of freedom.

Thank You Tina, I’ve had so much fun taking part in this creative exercise and I can’t wait to see your interpretation of the topic. xDoris

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with air travel for many years. I’ve been flying from a very young age. In my 20’s I used to take a plane like most people take the underground. I was probably on a plane most days. One day I experienced a massive panic attack mid flight and subsequent events forced me re-evaluate my entire life. It was a blessing in disguise but it also involved a lot of hardship and pain.

Here’s my Vignette and it’s story:

1. I actually love flying.
2. It used to feel more glamorous. I would dress up and feel like a movie star. These days it’s about comfort (hence the trainers).
3. I mostly travel in Europe as I tend to to take short breaks more often.
4. These days I prefer a 24-48 hours stint to the South of France than a 2 weeks holiday further afield.
5. I missed out on flying Concorde. Must have been an awesome experience.
6. My preferred airline is British Airways and Terminal 5 is unbeatable in the UK.
7. The world has got so much smaller since budget airlines and that’s a good thing.
8. I’m intrigued by the forthcoming Space travel but it equally terrifies me.
9. There are yet so many countries for me to experience. I wonder what the next decade will bring.
10. Maybe one day we can have a blogging retreat and actually charter a whole plane full of bloggers.
11. I loved painting this map!
12. The Concorde plane template (slightly adapted) I downloaded from here.
13. The Adidas miniature trainer I bought as limited edition many years ago.

Travel – my favourite subject. I love the way you have both depicted what travel means to you. Travel for me means freedom which is why Reinhard Mey’s song “Ueber den Wolken” (Above the clouds)is one of my favourite songs about the freedom and perspective which flying brings.

Ha. I didn’t know the song but have just listened to it… how funny, do you speak German?
The words are beautiful indeed and yet above the clouds freedom has no limits. Thanks Shona.

Thanks Shona, I can whole heartedly agree with the freedom bit. xD

Air travel is the best! I love that feeling of being in a taxi on the way to the airport heading somewhere exciting. Off to visit your blog Doris. Do you live in Melbourne? Well done to you both.

Can you believe that next month this series is 2 years old??? Where does the time go?
Yes, Getting to the airport is always exciting.

Doris lives in London but originates from Melbourne?

Love to travel, but hate planes.
And like you i have been getting on one since really early in my life, but I have loved all the places it has taken me.
Where will this plane full of bloggers be going, just out of curiosity??
My sister did get to travel on the Concorde (so jealous!!).
Interesting take on the theme from both of you!!

    • Reply tina June 3, 2014 at 10:55 pm

      Do you prefer trains then?
I know it’s strange when we grow up with flying a lot.
I remember my dad taking me for lunch to Italy for the day when I was 12. It felt so very glamorous….

Well, at the moment it’s Lalaland but who knows? Maybe we’ll find a bloggers island to hang out it and plot bloggers taking over the world:-))

      Wow! Concorde…. #missedopportunity
      Thank you Giova x

    • Reply Doris June 4, 2014 at 2:06 pm

Thanks Giova, agree that the best part about air travel is the destination it takes you to. xD

Cool vignettes Doris and Tina. I used to love flying – now it’s more of a means of getting somewhere. Security and some of those pesky budget airlines have undermined the whole experience. Still, get past that and yes, there is the sense of being FREE as you wonderfully illustrated Doris.

And Tina, I do love your painted map… particularly the vision of a united Ireland 😉

The Pinterest board is looking fab! Gxx

    • Reply tina June 5, 2014 at 9:51 am

      Thank you Gerard.

Ah, the dreaded security. But it gets us from A to B and the destination is always the exciting bit.
Hahaha, that made me LOL. I did paint a heart (on purpose) but the rest was unintentional:-)

Glad you like the Pinterest board. Am rather proud of it and all of you who contributed so far xx

    • Reply Doris June 18, 2014 at 1:34 pm

You are so right Gerard, being free is certainly difficult since the whole security requirement came into play! Thank You xD

Doris you just sparked a long forgotten dream I once had as a kid flying, I remember the feeling vividly now. So great that you get that feeling each time that you fly. A lovely vignette to express this dream and emotion.

Tina, I’d love to know what you did to fly so often before? How frightening for you to have a panic attack and so glad that it turned out to be a good thing. These moments do tend to work out like that although so hard to see at the time. And blogging retreat, all of us chatty bloggers in one plane and staying in the same place – sounds like a fab idea to me! Cool map and a huge thank you for the Concord templet, this will be a good weekend project for the kids. Big hugs! M xx

I had a marketing job where I would find agents abroad to represent our design product and train them accordingly. My boyfriend and family were in different countries too so I was constantly on a plane:-)
Yes, I was on a flight to Berlin after just gotten back from Barcelona the night before. My days in Berlin were ridden with Angst about the flight back home. Horrible time!!

Haha, maybe we can fulfill the blogging plane and holiday scenario some day:-))
Thank you Mel. Loved doing the map. Hope the kids will enjoy the plane templates xx

    • Reply Doris June 18, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Thank You so much Mel, flying dreams really are so vivid, it’s that feeling isn’t it? Tina, you sound like you had a very very hectic life on planes in the past, like taking a plane like most people take the bus 😉 xD
